Khulani
Khulani is an Arabica coffee from the Khawlan Bani Amer Districts in Saada Governorate, grown at elevations between 1,400 and 2,400 meters. The Dawari and Tuffahi beans develop their flavors on mountainous terraces, upper slopes, and floodplain fields, nurtured under 30% shade and in clay loam and sandy clay loam soils with pH 7–8. Farmers use composted animal manure and forest leaves, irrigate with rain, wells, springs, and spate systems, and rely on traditional pest control methods such as smoke from Ficus salicifolia wood and plant-based sprays. Trees are tended manually or with animal assistance at a density of about 2,000 per hectare. Hand-harvested between October and March, the cherries are sun-dried on rooftops and raised beds, hulled, sorted, and machine-graded. The resulting organic green coffee offers a dry-processed specialty experience with notes of chocolate, strawberry, and white fruit, finishing with a sweet aftertaste. Production spans 187 hectares, involving 222 farmers from 263 households, with coffee providing around 70% of household income.
